Bowel cancer is the third most common of cancers and one of the most treatable if detected early enough. 85% of men refuse to consult a doctor even if they have symptoms and screening programmes in the USA have reduced mortality by 1/3rd.

This test detects the presence of blood in the faeces which may be indicative of an underlying condition. The lining of your gut (gastro-intestinal tract) may bleed if it is injured. It has been suggested that all people over 50 years of age should be screening themselves regularly for early signs of bowel disorders.

Your symptoms may include any or all of the following: Blood in stools, tiredness, weight loss, abdominal pain, passing mucus intermittent diarrhoea and constipation, indigestion, nausea and vomiting.

This screening test relies upon detection in a biological system therefore it is possible that it may not be 100% accurate in every case. Occasionally the test may produce a false positive or a false negative result. As with all screening tests therapeutic decisions should not be based on any single result or method. In the case of unexpected results or symptoms consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

If any symptoms you do have persist you should consult your GP as they may indicate the presence of another disorder.
