What is Lactose Intolerance?

Lactose intolerance is the name given to the condition where the body has difficulty in digesting lactose, a sugar found in milk. Lactose needs to be converted into glucose and galactose by the enzyme lactase which is found in the small intestine. When there is not enough lactase, the lactose cannot be broken down leading to lactose intolerance.

A self-testing way to help identify if you may have an intolerance to lactose is by drinking a glass of milk on an empty stomach. Suffers are likely to then notice some or all or the following common symptoms within four hours:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Bloating
  • Flatulence and burping

Causes of lactose intolerance are varied and could be inherited through family, a result of a stomach infection (bacterial or viral), a complication of chemotherapy or a temporary condition which could affect babies that are born premature (more than 6 weeks) as it takes a while for the enzyme to build up in their digestive system.

Diet can help to manage the symptoms of lactose intolerance, by choosing foods carefully. However another way to help support the body in digesting lactose in through a supplement to deliver a therapeutic amount of the enzyme lactase straight into your digestive system.
