You may be familiar with sweeter Bing and Rainier cherries from the grocery store, but it's the Acerola cherry that leads this fruit group in vitamin C content. Just 2/3 of a cup may contain up to 4,000 mg of natural C, and one cherry contains far more vitamin C than an orange! Swanson Premium Acerola capsules provide a 4:1 concentrate, and although the exact vitamin C content has not been measured, be assured that they are a natural source of this important antioxidant for immune health.

What is Swanson Acerola?

The Acerola is a form of bright red, incredibly sweet cherry which originated in the Yucatan. It is now commonly farmed and harvested everywhere from the decidedly warm climates of South and Central America to the southern states of Texas, California and Florida.

The plant actually requires incredibly hot and dry climates to survive in (nothing below 30 degrees) and is easily uprooted by strong gusts of wind. What makes it all the more special is that the fruit, the Acerola cherry, is even more fragile than its host plant.

Once picked, the cherry quickly spoils (as soon as four hours after). Fermentation soon sets in and after just three to five days, they become unusable altogether. Even when frozen they have a tendency to disintegrate upon thawing, rendering them useful only to locals. The result of this is that they have historically been used primarily in jams and syrups. Until now, when studies have revealed that they actually contain exceptionally high levels of Vitamin C and other nutrients.

In fact there is so much vitamin C in Swanson Acerola that studies have shown it to be over thirteen times more concentrated than a cup of orange juice. With 1677.6 mg of vitamin C/100 g of fruit it truly is a phenomenal source of that most crucial of antioxidants.

What is Swanson Acerola used for?

In a comparative study of the relative antioxidant potency of various different fruit pulps conducted recently, the results were fascinating. Of the eleven different pulps that were tested , Acerola was far and away the highest scoring - its antioxidant capacity score standing at 53.2 mg.

At the core of that antioxidant score was its unbelievably high vitamin C content.

Our bodies require vitamin C for a number of reasons. First and foremost it plays a huge role in our immune systems but it also helps with the synthesis of collagen - the central structural component of our bones, skin and blood vessels. It even plays a huge role in the synthesis of certain brain chemicals used to regulate our moods.

We all know that we should eat oranges in winter to stave off illness and infections but what if there was a more potent solution? Swanson Acerola can be that solution.

But it's not just Vitamin C found in Swanson Acerola. It is also packed full of Vitamin A - with it harbouring as much as a whole bunch of carrots. Our bodies use Vitamin A to support macular (visual) health as well as red blood cell production and normal growth patterns.

  • Massive amounts of Vitamins C & A
  • Numerous B-vitamins
  • Calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium.
  • Fibre, Protein, fibre and fatty acids can also be found in Acerola
