One of the things that has really helped Cinnamon to stand out through history is its undeniable adaptability. As much a delicious complement for sweet dishes as it is for savoury ones, this humble tree bark has been at the heart of so much history - both culinary and medicinal - for millennia.
Possessed of a quite unique aroma, the smell of Cinnamon is one that is almost instantly recognisable for just about all of us. What makes it such a personal spice is that like so many other notable smells, its musk transports each of us to a different place. To some of us, it serves as a warming reminder of our youth and baked apple pies; to others it is the unmistakeable scent of Christmas while to some its tang reminds them of rich curries or deep, dark casseroles.
Whatever your preference, Swanson Cinnamon is the all natural, unmistakably delicious, completely organic and handily ground spice that is as tasty as it is affordable.
As with many other exotic spices that have become commonplace in the household, there is a tendency to overlook Cinnamon's incredible background and history and even take it for granted. For instance, have you ever wondered why Cinnamon (in the stick form) comes in a scroll like shape?
The answer is because far from being a 'stick', Cinnamon is actually the bark of the Cinnamomum loureirii tree that has been dried and then rolled for ease of use and transport. And while this may sound like a clever modern trick, we've been consuming Cinnamon in this way for thousands of years.
With records going back as far as 2,000 BC, when the Egyptians used it as a perfume, Cinnamon has been a shifting point of fascination to mankind longer than most modern cultures.
Originally transported into Europe by Arabs as part of a complex trade route, Cinnamon's popularity grew and grew until it became something of a luxury product amongst the middle classes. So much so in fact, that the traders became increasingly determined to protect the source of the precious bark; making up stories of monsters and giant birds to protect it from explorers.
By the time it was finally discovered in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) by the Dutch in the 16th century, it had become an incredibly valuable asset. Prized especially for its ability to preserve meats through winter. Years of land wars broke out attempting to control the trade route and Cinnamon's value.
Today of course, Swanson Certified Organic Ground Cinnamon isn't nearly as dear but equally delicious and, of course, incredibly good for you too.
