What is Swanson Green, White & Black Tea Complex?

First things first - full disclosure - did you know that Green, White and Black Teas all come from the same plant? They are, in fact, all borne of the same vibrant flora Camellia Sinensis. It is not their host plant that makes for their unique distinctions, rather it is their preparation.

As we have all come to embrace antioxidants (and in particular Green Tea) into our lives we have all come to learn a little more about them. Antioxidants provide us with much needed protection against harmful and toxic free radical cells which ravage our own cellular structure causing inflammation and even disease.

So where does this fabled antioxidant, Tea, come from? Green tea comes from the small, leafy variety Camellia Sinensis Sinensis and is most commonly found growing in the inhospitable terrain on mountainsides. It is perhaps fitting that this tenacious healer should be born of humble beginnings and it perhaps explains why tea has been revered and prized by the Chinese and Japanese for so long.

What makes Green, Black and White tea different is all to do with Oxidation.

  • White Tea is the most expensive and rare. It gets its name from the fine, white hairs on the unopened, preserved buds of the plant. Most commonly found in the Fujian province of China, the entire bud is dried allowing it retain its natural state and nutrients. Of which the majority are potent antioxidants.
  • Black Tea is perhaps the most maligned of the three with many believing it to be inferior. Recent research has suggested that Black Tea actually has just as many antioxidants as Green Tea. It is made by drying and rolling the leaves until they are ready to Oxidate. The process takes about an hour and it is the reason they turn black. The leaves are then heated to give them a stronger flavour.
  • Green Tea has to be the most famous health giving of the three. Something of a celebrity on the antioxidant circuit, it is so common in Asia that it is usually referred to as just 'tea'. It is made from the un-oxidised leaves of the plant and then quickly heated or 'fried' to seal in all its goodness and destroy any enzymes. Bursting with natural vitamins, such as A, B1, B2, B6, C & D and Carotene, Green Tea also contains minerals like Sodium, Potassium and Iron.
