Often referred to as the ‘Grandfather of superfoods'. These antioxidant rich, blue pearls of goodness have been causing a stir on the health scene for some time now. So ripe with goodness are they that there isn't a nutritionist alive who wouldn't recommend adding blueberries to your everyday diet.
Twenty years ago, Blueberries represented little more to us than tiny, sweet spheres of fruity goodness. We enjoyed them as part of our breakfast, dessert or just by themselves. As fruit, we knew they were good for us but in their absolute essence, they were little more than tasty treats.
Fast forward to today and pretty much everyone knows that blueberries are the fulcrum around which other superfoods rotate. They are ‘superfood x' - the one that started it all.
Perennial flowering plants indigenous to North America, the blueberry plant (Cyanococcus) was only actually introduced to Europe in the 1930s. It was the Native Americans who first started cultivating the berry and the habit was quickly picked up on by the settlers - blueberries becoming a staple of diet of soldiers during the civil war.
Its uses didn't stop there though - it actually formed an essential element of the paint that the colonists used to make by boiling blueberry skins with milk, sage blossoms and indigo.
To this day, the US is the world's largest supplier of blueberries, having harvested over 560 million pounds of both wild and cultivated berries. Fascinatingly, over 60% of those were sold as fresh fruit, paying testament to the blueberry's popularity.
Of course that means that from the remaining 40% must have come Swanson GreenFoods Wild Blueberry Extract - a preserved form of intense blueberry extract with all of the nutritional benefits of blueberries but with none of the perishable downsides.
Did you know that the North American blueberry industry is responsible for nearly 90% of the world's blueberry supply? And of that, it ships out over 100 metric tons of the berries every year to Iceland, not to mention 500 metric tons it sends to Japan.
This is a superfood in demand. But why? For its delicious flavour? The truth though, is more simple than that, it lies in the chemistry.
Jam packed full of fibre and vitamins such as Vitamins K, C and B6, Blueberries are also a great source of minerals such as manganese and phosphorus. What makes them really special though, are their phytochemical compounds. It is these compounds that give it fantastic antioxidants like anthocyanins, which make it one of the most nutritious foods available to us today.
In a 2012 a study of some 93,000 women who were eating three or more portions of blueberries per week (as part of a healthy diet) it was discovered that they had a 32% lower risk of heart disease or heart attack than those women who weren't.
