What is Swanson Licorice Root?

Also known as liquorice, Licorice Root is taken from the underground stems of the Glycyrrhiza glabra perennial plant grown in Greece, Turkey and Asia. It is so named for it is the compound glycyrrhiza which gives licorice its recognisable sweet flavour. In fact licorice is 50 times sweeter than table sugar and was used as a popular flavouring in confectionary, food and beverage products. Today this has been replaced by anise oil, although Licorice Root is still used as a flavouring in herbal medicines, cough and throat candies and tobacco products.

Licorice Root has had a long history of use in Ancient Greece, China and Egypt to help alleviate inflammation in the stomach. Today licorice root is recognised for its number of potentially beneficial substances for health including flavanoids, phytoestrogens and the compound glycyrrhiza (or glycyrrhizic acid). The chemicals in Licorice Root are thought to alleviate digestive conditions, maintain liver health and help to provide relief from upper respiratory complaints such as throat pain and congestive coughs. Its effect on the adrenal gland also makes Licorice Root a useful tonic for chronic fatigue.

Available in various forms from tinctures to lozenges and teas, Swanson, a US manufacturer and supplier of dietary and herbal supplements which have been rigorously tested for purity and potency, brings you the health benefits of Licorice Root in a convenient daily capsule.

What is Swanson Licorice Root used for?

Licorice Root has long been used in traditional Chinese remedies for it was thought to promote longevity. Today modern research suggests that Licorice Root may have other health benefits including:

  • Symptomatic relief of chronic fatigue syndrome: Licorice Root stimulates the adrenal gland to produce cortisol.
  • Fights of colds and flu: Licorice Root helps increases levels of interferon, a virus fighting substance manufactured by the immune system. Licorice Root may help to relieve sore throat and coughs.
  • Reduces inflammation: Licorice Root could help to combat inflammation of the liver.
  • A digestive tonic: Licorice Root may have benefits to the digestive tract, particularly inflammation and promotes bowel health.
  • Menstrual complaints: Licorice Root may mimic the effects of oestrogen in the body, so when levels are high in PMS, it reduces its affect and when levels are low in menopause, it acts as a substitute.
