What is Swanson Ultra Albion Chelated Multi-Mineral Glycinate?

The human body requires a whole range of minerals, we call them essential minerals. They can be sub categorised into groups of major minerals (or macrominerals) and trace minerals (microminerals). While both are of equal value to us, they are required in differing quantities. Trace minerals, for instance, are needed in smaller amounts than major minerals. What is important to remember is that those amounts do not equate to their importance or relevance to the human body.

Whilst we can usually rely on our diets to provide most of these minerals there are several common reasons why we might find ourselves with depleted amounts. Illness, inhibiting medication and dietary restrictions such as veganism, lactose intolerance and allergies are all external factors that might see our levels depleted.

The trouble with most mineral supplementation is that by simply consuming the mineral either by itself or as a compound (zinc chloride for instance), we leave ourselves open to our body's natural digestive process breaking down or bonding them with other dietary agents, rendering them unabsorbable in the intestines.

Chelation is the process of wrapping the minerals in a protective enclosure of amino acids and other natural, organic acids to better protect it through the digestive process. When our bodies digest food, it dissolves it from its solid form using hydrochloric acid. That same acid can have a detrimental effect on the minerals, forcing them to bind with other dietary agents meaning that the intestine can't absorb them.
